TV Actress Rescued From Thane Trafficking Racket, Woman Held

A 35-year-old Hindi television actress has been rescued from an alleged prostitution and human trafficking racket in Maharashtra’s Thane district. Police have arrested a 39-year-old woman in connection with the case, while a search continues for her alleged male associate.

The rescued actor has worked in Hindi television serials and web series, police said. Her name and the projects she has been part of have not been disclosed. She has been placed under protective custody at the Rescue Foundation in Mumbai while the investigation moves forward.

The raid on Mira-Bhayander Road

Filmibeat, citing PTI, reports that the rescue followed a tip-off from an NGO. On October 8, the NGO sent a decoy customer to a hotel on Mira-Bhayander Road. Based on that lead, police conducted a raid and apprehended a woman identified as Tabassum, also known as Sonia Umar Qureshi, 39.

She was allegedly caught accepting money connected to the racket. Qureshi is originally from Surguja district in Chhattisgarh and currently lives in Mumbai’s Jogeshwari area.

The decoy route matters in such cases. It gives police grounds to move quickly, because a victim may not be in a position to call for help themselves. Civil-society leads often become the first break in trafficking investigations.

What police suspect

Investigators suspect that Qureshi and her male associate were involved in forcing women linked to the entertainment sector into prostitution. According to the report, the women concerned were associated with television serials, web series and photo shoots.

Qureshi has been booked under Section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with human trafficking, along with the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. The allegations are still under investigation, and the alleged victims or the accused man’s role have not been detailed.

Why this hits close to home for TV aspirants

The glamour of television can be misused to build trust. Newcomers often travel alone for meetings and may ignore red flags in the hope of a break, particularly when a “casting” or “photo shoot” call sounds legitimate. A hotel or temporary address makes the whole process harder to trace.

This case is a reminder that a genuine production house will not ask an actor to pay for an audition or a role, and will not insist that a newcomer meet in a private, unverified location without an agent, manager, parent or friend. The promise of a break should never require someone to give up their safety.

Safer steps for castings and shoots

  • Verify the production house, casting agency or coordinator before agreeing to meet.
  • Take a friend, parent or manager to an unknown audition, especially at a hotel or private space.
  • Never pay money for an audition or a guaranteed role.
  • If a call feels rushed or secretive, contact the police or a trusted NGO before going ahead.

The search for the alleged male accomplice is still on, and the police have not shared further details about how the network operated. As the investigation unfolds, more updates are likely on whether others from the entertainment circuit were affected.
