Ektaa Kapoor confirms The Dirty Picture 2 after 15 years
Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed the sequel is in development, but the cast, director, release date and the woman at the centre remain under wraps.

Fifteen years after the original opened on December 2, 2011, Ektaa Kapoor has confirmed that The Dirty Picture 2 is officially in development. The producer shared the news on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, saying she has finally found a story she wants to bring to the screen.
What Ektaa Kapoor said
Kapoor kept the sequel details slim but clear. She said: “One very big film I’m making is The Dirty Picture 2. I’m planning it after 15 years. This time, I believe there is a story I want to tell.”
That is as far as the confirmation goes for now. There is no cast, no director and no release date yet, and Kapoor has not made a separate announcement on her social media accounts.
Why the original still looms large
The 2011 film starred Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor. It was inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, the South Indian actor who appeared in more than 450 films over an 18-year career.
Kapoor said she never saw Smitha as a victim. Instead, she saw her as a woman who celebrated her sexuality on her own terms. “The film did so well,” she said, linking that spirit to the sequel: once again, it will centre on a woman whose story has something significant to say.
The original explored the complexities of a woman who challenged social conventions around sexuality and faced judgement for her choices. Kapoor’s comments suggest the sequel wants to return to that theme rather than simply ride the title.
What we know and what we don’t
- Confirmed: The Dirty Picture 2 is in development.
- The hook: It will follow a woman whose story, Kapoor believes, needs to be told.
- Still open: Cast, director, release date, and the real-life figure behind the new story.
For fans of the original, the sequel is both exciting and risky. The first film became widely associated with Vidya Balan’s performance, and any new lead will be compared instantly. That is likely why the announcement, for now, is only about the story and not the face in front of it.
The bigger picture for Telly Drama readers
Ektaa Kapoor is a familiar name to Indian TV viewers long before this film, and the wait-and-watch mode here is sensible. Strong stories can take years, and a sequel arriving 15 years later carries expectations that a quick announcement cannot settle.
What has not been shared is whose life or experiences will drive the new instalment. That leaves the biggest question for fans: will the sequel revisit a known figure, or introduce a new one? Kapoor has not said.
The original’s real-life inspiration, Silk Smitha, died by suicide at the age of 35 in Chennai. That is part of why the framing matters: Kapoor says she never saw Smitha as a victim, and the sequel is being described first as a story, not a recast.
Until the next update, the conversation is wide open. The legacy of the original has already set the bar.
