Salman Khan has spent years telling Bigg Boss contestants to stop hiding behind a safe game. On the latest Weekend Ka Vaar, he finally shared the personal reason: he once got the same advice, and it changed his career.
During Bigg Boss 20’s weekend episode, the host urged the housemates to show their real personalities instead of playing cautiously. He reminded them that disagreements and arguments are part of the Bigg Boss format, and joked that if they gave him nothing to discuss, Weekend Ka Vaar would become a very short conversation.
The TV offer he almost turned down
Salman then looked back at 2008, when Dus Ka Dum came to him at a low point. He recalled that media attention around his court cases, relationships and films had become so loud that it was drowning out his work. “Bahot saari negativity” was against him, he said.
Given the coverage, he was not sure he wanted to be on television at all. He discussed the offer with his father, Salim Khan. The advice? Trust yourself and let how you were raised show.
“Bharosa rakho, upbringing dikhao,” Salman recalled his father saying.
He took the show. Once it aired, he said, viewers stopped treating him as just a film actor. They forgot the films for a moment and showed up to see a person.
From one episode to a reality TV era
Salman compared it with Amitabh Bachchan’s association with Kaun Banega Crorepati. The right format can turn a film star into a television personality. In his telling, the media image that had built up was “cleared in one episode.”
- 2008: Dus Ka Dum premieres on Sony Entertainment Television.
- Three seasons: Salman hosts the Indian adaptation of Power of 10.
- Bigg Boss run: He goes on to host 17 seasons, including the current Bigg Boss 20.
Why this matters for Bigg Boss watchers
That history is not just a nostalgia break. It explains why Salman pushes contestants to be messy, honest and visible. He knows how much a television format can rewrite public perception, because it did exactly that for him.
For season 20 viewers, the Weekend Ka Vaar message is clear: the housemates who play too carefully are likely to hear about it. And if they do not give him something real to engage with, the host has already warned them what happens next.
